Sandown Isle of Wight Airport

Since 1935 Isle of Wight Airport, just outside of Sandown, has been a popular airfield for those flying to the Island. But it’s not just reserved for lucky folk with access to an aircraft – it’s a visitor destination in its own right.

Spend some time at the Island Bistro and watch planes come and go; you’ll be able to enjoy wood-fired pizza, regular BBQs and Sunday roasts. Dogs are welcome (in fact, they are treated like VIPs and always get a treat!) and there’s often live music in a fun, festival-like atmosphere.

The airport is also home to the Wight Aviation Museum, where you can see a host of rare exhibits. Thrill seekers can book a helicopter or microlight pleasure flight, a skydive, or take flying lessons.

For those wanting to fly in, the grass surface, all-weather runway is 884m x 40m and fuel is available on a self-serve basis. The airport is open all year and radio coverage at the tower is available between 09:00 to 17:00 local time or sunset (whichever is earlier), seven days a week. “Flamping” is also available for pilots to camp onsite overnight. The ICAO airport code is EGHN.
